How to Travel from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp in Tibet
The straight-line distance between Kathmandu and Tibet's EBC is around 160 kilometers, which might seem like an easy day trip. However, you won't want to put yourself at risk of altitude sickness, miss out on scenic views, or overlook the rule that independent travel in Tibet is not allowed—all trips to Tibet's EBC must be booked with a registered tour operator.
You have two fantastic options to reach the base camp, each with its own rhythm and highlights.

Option 1: The Direct Overland Route via Gyirong Port
For those eager to hit the road and see the landscape change before their eyes, the overland journey through the Gyirong Port border is the most direct path. The trip starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to the Nepal-China border. After completing customs formalities on the Nepali side at Rasuwagadhi, you'll cross the bridge into Tibet, where your Tibetan guide and driver will be waiting warmly to welcome you. Your first night is typically spent in Gyirong Town, allowing you to gently begin acclimatizing to the higher elevation. The following day, you embark on the drive to the base camp. The road winds through stunning valleys and alongside towering peaks, eventually joining the famous Friendship Highway. A key turn leads you toward Rongbuk Monastery, famed as the highest monastery in the world. The sight of Everest's north face rising behind the ancient walls of Rongbuk is unforgettable. From there, it's just a short shuttle ride to the base camp itself. This entire overland route from the border can be completed in about two days, making it efficient and incredibly scenic.

Option 2: The Cultural & Acclimatization Route via Lhasa
If you have more time and wish to immerse yourself deeply in Tibetan culture, beginning your trip in Lhasa is the perfect choice. You can fly directly from Kathmandu to Lhasa Gonggar Airport in about 1.5 hours. Spending two to three days in Lhasa is highly recommended to acclimatize to the high altitude while exploring iconic sites like the Potala Palace and the sacred Jokhang Temple. Once acclimatized, the overland journey from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp is one of the world's great road trips, typically taking 8 to 10 days. You'll travel along the Friendship Highway, passing the turquoise waters of Yamdrok Lake, visiting historic monasteries in Gyantse and Shigatse, and crossing several high mountain passes. This route builds anticipation beautifully, culminating in your arrival at the base camp with a much deeper understanding of the region's spiritual and natural landscape.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
