Tibet Travel Guide by Regions

Tibet, the world’s largest and highest plateau, stretches nearly 1600 miles and is made up of 7 regions, 6 of which are open to foreign travelers, offering a blend of cultural richness and breathtaking landscapes. Each region offers unique cultural and scenic attractions, such as ancient monasteries and beautiful alpine lakes, making them worth visiting one by one. For most travelers, especially first-timers, the central region, including Lhasa and Shigatse, is a must-visit. An overland trip from Lhasa to Kathmandu through these areas is highly recommended, with highlights like Yamdrok Lake and Everest Base Camp. The more remote regions of Western Tibet (Ngari), home to the sacred Mount Kailash, and Eastern Tibet (Nyingchi), known for its lush forests and clear rivers, are ideal for second-time visitors who want to explore Tibet’s diverse landscapes more deeply.
  • Lhasa

Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, sits at an altitude of 3,658 meters in a small basin surrounded by mountains and rivers. The city is home to many tourist attractions, and it normally takes at least a week to explore both the main sites within Lhasa and those nearby.
  • Shigatse

Shigatse is the second-largest city in Central Tibet and the capital of Shigatse Prefecture. The region is home to several popular trekking routes, including the path to Everest Base Camp and Gama Valley. The 1,300 km Friendship Highway, connecting Lhasa and Kathmandu, passes through Shigatse, linking some of Tibet's most important monasteries and tourist sites.
  • Nyingchi

Nyingchi, located in western Tibet, has the lowest altitude and pleasant weather year-round. Often called "the Switzerland of Tibet," it is known for its stunning natural beauty, with snow-capped mountains and dense forests.
  • Ngari

Ngari, located in northwestern Tibet, sits at an elevation of 4,500 meters above sea level. It is where the Himalayas, Gangdise, and Kunlun Mountains meet, and is home to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar.
  • Lhokha

Lhokha (Shannan), known as "the cradle of Tibetan civilization," lies along the middle and lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River. This region features renowned monasteries, palaces, beautiful lakes, and peaceful river valleys, creating a unique landscape.
  • Chamdo

Chamdo Prefecture, located in eastern Tibet along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, connects Sichuan with Tibet. It is also famous for the ancient Tea-Horse Road, part of the South Silk Road.
  • Nagchu

Nagchu, the largest prefecture in Tibet, is known for its vast Qiangtang grassland, stunning lakes, and ancient monasteries. The region is also rich in wildlife and alpine vegetation.
