Lhasa to Shigatse: How to Get There by Train or Bus?
To keep your Tibet trip compliant with regulations, you'll need to travel between Lhasa and Shigatse in one of two simple, pre-approved ways: a tourist car booked by a registered agency, or a Tibet train ticket registered with the Tibet Tourism Bureau. These public buses are not part of Tibet's foreign tourist transport registration system, and taking them will make your trip non-compliant.
Including the Lhasa-Shigatse train in your journey is typically part of Tibet's private customized tour services. The Lhasa-Shigatse Railway (Lari Railway) connects the two cities directly, with a travel time of about 2 to 3 hours and a distance of around 280 kilometers. There are 3 to 4 trains daily, mostly running between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm. Ticket prices vary by class: second class costs approximately 64 RMB, first class around 103 RMB, and business class about 225 RMB. The train ride offers a wonderful travel experience—large viewing windows let you enjoy the breathtaking scenery along the way, including the winding Yarlung Tsangpo River and the vast grasslands of southern Tibet. On board, facilities are complete: there's a dining car serving hot meals and drinks, clean restrooms, and free hot water for passengers. When you arrive at Shigatse Railway Station (about 10 kilometers from Shigatse city center), a dedicated tourist vehicle arranged by our agency will pick you up.

Booking train tickets from Lhasa to Shigatse is convenient for foreign visitors. Just like Chinese citizens, you can book tickets on the 12306 platform (China's official railway booking system), but our travel agency provides free ticket-booking assistance to save you trouble. Train tickets go on sale 15 days before the departure date. Our team will book tickets for you as soon as they are available, and we'll also choose seats based on your preferences—whether you want a window seat for sightseeing or an aisle seat for easy movement. There are no extra service fees for this help, ensuring you get your desired tickets without any hassle.

Another great option is to use a registered tourist vehicle for the entire trip from Lhasa to Shigatse, which is a must-have arrangement for all our Tibet group tours. We mainly use business cars or minibuses, which are comfortable and suitable for small groups. This option is designed for detours to popular scenic spots along the way. First, we'll stop at Yamdrok Lake, about 100 kilometers from Lhasa. Our guides will take you to Gangbala Pass Viewpoint for a panoramic view of the lake—its crystal-clear blue waters sparkling under the sun, with snow-capped mountains in the background. You'll also visit a lakeside spot to take close-up photos. Then, we'll head to Karola Glacier, about 50 kilometers from Yamdrok Lake. During the visit, you'll learn about the glacier's role in the local ecosystem and its cultural significance to Tibetans.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
