How to Travel from Nyingchi to Lhasa
Probably, choosing Nyingchi as your first stop in Tibet can be a more scientific and safer option, especially if you're worried about altitude sickness. Not only does it allow you to acclimate to the high altitude more easily, but it also offers a chance to experience Tibet's diverse landscapes. The journey from Nyingchi to Lhasa offers various modes of transportation, including road, train, and air, each with its unique features. Let's explore them in detail.

Why Start Your Tibet Journey from Nyingchi?
If you're a first-time visitor to Tibet, Nyingchi offers several advantages over Lhasa as your starting point:
Lower Altitude, Easier Acclimatization: With an average altitude of around 2,900m, Nyingchi's oxygen levels are closer to those in low-altitude areas. This helps reduce the risk of severe altitude sickness. Many tourists who fly directly to Lhasa (3,650 meters) may experience headaches and insomnia due to oxygen deficiency. Starting from Nyingchi allows your body to adapt to the high-altitude environment gradually.
Unique Scenery: Unlike the dry and vast landscapes that some people associate with Tibet, Nyingchi surprises visitors with its diverse beauty. In spring (March–April), the wild peach blossoms in the Pome Scenic Area blanket the mountains. Summer (June–August) brings the lush forests of the Lulang area and the magnificent Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon. Autumn (Septembe–October) paints the banks of the Nyang River with vibrant colors like an oil painting. Starting from Nyingchi gives you a more comprehensive understanding of Tibet's natural diversity.
Less Crowded, More Serene: Compared to Lhasa's famous attractions like the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, Nyingchi's scenic spots such as Basum Lake are less crowded. Especially outside the peak season, you can enjoy a leisurely time at the Lulang Pasture, watching yaks graze, or sit by the Yarlung Zangbo River, listening to the sound of the water.
How to Get from Nyingchi to Lhasa
The distance from Nyingchi to Lhasa is approximately 400 kilometers, and there are three main modes of transportation to choose from:
By Road: This is the most recommended option for travelers who want to enjoy the scenery along the way. The journey primarily follows the Nyingchi-Lhasa Expressway (G4218), which takes about 4.5-6 hours. The well-maintained asphalt road is smooth and wide, with few bumps. Highlights Along the Way: The Nyang River, a tributary of the Yarlung Zangbo River, features clear emerald-green waters. The banks are lined with barley fields and Tibetan villages. In spring, the peach blossoms reflect in the river, while in autumn, the golden leaves create postcard-perfect scenes.
By Train: The railway from Nyingchi to Lhasa (Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway) is one of Tibet's most scenic rail routes, taking around 5 hours, which costs between 64 and 160 yuan.
Advantages of the Train Journey: The train is equipped with a diffused oxygen supply system, ensuring comfortable travel even in tunnels. The spacious seats and large viewing windows allow you to take in the beautiful scenery outside.
Scenic Features Along the Way: As the train departs Nyingchi, you'll see dense forests and rivers. Closer to Lhasa, the landscape gradually transitions to vast barley fields and Tibetan villages. Finally, you'll catch a glimpse of the Lhasa River Valley in the distance. This journey showcases Tibet's geographical diversity, from dense forests to open plains.
By Air: At present, there are no direct flights from Nyingchi's Milin Airport to Lhasa Gonggar Airport. Most flights require a transfer in Chengdu, taking over 5 hours and costing around 1,000 yuan, so this option is not recommended.

Conclusion
Happy travels, and may your Tibet journey be as rich and vibrant as the landscapes you'll discover!

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
