Yungdrungling Monastery: Tibet's Ancient Bon Heritage
You will find Yungdrungling Monastery nestled on the north bank of the majestic Yarlung Tsangpo in Nanmulin County, Shigatse with an altitude of 3,750 meters—gentler on the body compared to higher regions like Ngari. It's conveniently located 170 kilometers west of Lhasa and 90 kilometers east of Shigatse, right across the river from the busy Sino-Nepal Highway that links these two major Tibetan cities. Getting there is straightforward: a 2-hour drive from Lhasa or a 1.5-hour ride from Shigatse by tourist vehicle.

Yungdrungling is one of Tibet's four major Bon religion monasteries, and Yungdrungling's history stretches back over a thousand years. First built in the 7th century during the reign of King Songtsen Gampo, it was the second most influential Bon monastic institution in Tibet, housing around 700 monks. Today, the number has decreased to dozens, but these monks come from various Bon factions across Tibet, bringing diverse perspectives to the monastery's spiritual life. As you walk through the gates, you'll feel the calm and sacred atmosphere that has drawn pilgrims and travelers alike for centuries.

One of the first things you'll notice at Yungdrungling is the unique anticlockwise-swirling swastikas—a key symbol of Bon religion, different from the clockwise symbols in Tibetan Buddhism. Inside, you'll find impressive thrones along the walls for the monastery's two resident Shiromos, adorned with the deity's characteristic swastika mace. Beyond the main hall, there are several smaller chapels worth exploring, including the Namjya Lhakhang.

Conclusion
Remember to follow Bon custom and visit these chapels in an anticlockwise direction—this simple gesture shows respect for the local culture. Every corner of the monastery tells a story, from the intricate murals on the walls to the prayer flags fluttering outside.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
