Top Things to Do in Shannan

Dec 29, 2025 11:43 By lewis

Nestled along the majestic Yarlung Tsangpo River, Shannan, also known as Lhoka, is an essential part of Tibetan civilization. If your heart seeks not just sights, but origins, then let Shannan be the answer to your travel contemplations.

Explore Iconic Natural Landscapes of the Himalayan Foothills

Shannan, nestled at the southern foot of the Himalayas, is blessed with some of Tibet's most stunning natural scenery, making it a paradise for nature lovers. Start your journey by visiting Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet's three sacred lakes, where you can take a leisurely walk along the lakeshore and watch the Himalayan peaks cast their reflections on the crystal-clear blue waters. For a more immersive experience, take a boat ride on the lake to feel the gentle breeze and admire the surrounding snow-capped mountains. Head next to Pumoyong Tso, especially in winter when the lake freezes into a magical blue ice wonderland—you can walk on the thick ice and capture breathtaking photos of the ice cracks and distant peaks. Another must-do is exploring Lebu Gou, a lush valley known for its dense forests and gurgling streams; here, you can go bird watching and spot rare species like the black-necked crane. If you're up for a scenic drive, take the road from Tsedang to Lhasa, which offers unobstructed views of the Himalayan mountain range and rolling alpine meadows dotted with yaks.

Dive into Tibet's Ancient Cultural Roots

As the cradle of Tibetan civilization, Shannan is rich in historical and cultural sites that tell the story of Tibet's past. Visit Yumbulagang, Tibet's first palace, perched on a hilltop with panoramic views of the surrounding plains. Climb the stone steps to the palace and explore its ancient halls, where you can learn about the life of Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wencheng. Next, tour Changzhu Monastery, Tibet's first Buddhist temple, famous for its exquisite murals and ancient Buddha statues—spend some time admiring the intricate craftsmanship and feeling the peaceful religious atmosphere. Make your way to Samye Monastery, the first fully-fledged monastery in Tibet, which combines Tibetan, Han, and Indian architectural styles. Walk around the monastery's courtyard and visit the main hall to see the giant Buddha statue and ancient scriptures. For a deeper understanding of Tibetan history, visit the Tibet Museum of Prehistory in Tsedang, where you can view relics dating back thousands of years, including stone tools, pottery, and ancient rock paintings. You can also attend a traditional Tibetan opera performance in Tsedang's old town, where performers wear colorful costumes and masks to tell ancient stories through song and dance.

Indulge in Authentic Tibetan Cuisine and Local Delicacies

When it comes to dining, start your day with a cup of butter tea and a plate of tsampa, a traditional Tibetan staple made from roasted barley flour—mix it with butter tea to make a hearty and energy-boosting breakfast. Try Tibetan dumplings filled with minced yak meat and vegetables, steamed or boiled and served with a spicy sauce. For a savory dish, order stir-fried yak meat with wild mushrooms, a local specialty that combines the tenderness of yak meat with the earthy flavor of wild mushrooms. Don't miss the chance to taste yogurt rice, a sweet and sour dish made with local yogurt and rice, perfect for refreshing your palate. Visit a local Tibetan home to try home-cooked dishes like braised yak ribs and potato stew with cheese. For a snack, buy some Tibetan barley cakes from a street vendor—crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Wash down your meal with chang, a traditional Tibetan barley wine, which has a mild alcohol content and a sweet, fruity flavor. You can also participate in a cooking class in Tsedang to learn how to make these traditional Tibetan dishes yourself.

Embark on Outdoor Adventures and Leisure Activities

Shannan offers a wide range of outdoor activities for adventure seekers and leisure travelers alike. Go horseback riding on the alpine meadows near Yamdrok Lake, where you can gallop through the grasslands and enjoy the fresh mountain air. You can also go camping in the meadows near Pumoyong Tso, where you can sleep under the stars and wake up to the sight of the Himalayan sunrise. For a relaxing day, visit a local hot spring in Tsedang—soak in the warm, mineral-rich waters to soothe your muscles after a day of exploring and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Conclusion

Allow Shannan to astonish you with its ancient wonders, humble you before its sacred legacy, and ultimately, uplift your soul.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April

Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Is it open for Indian Passport Holder?

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.

We would like to take the train from Xining to Lhasa, then stay in Lhasa and mostly just walk around Barkhor, but also visit 3 monasteries: Sera (by bus), Drak Yerpa (by pilgrimage bus) and Tschokhang. We would like to stay in Lhasa for 10 days total, then leave by plane. Can you arrange a permit for this trip for us (3 Canadians)? Best regards, Brigitte Mueller

The "Tibet Entry Permit" should be apply

I heard from my friend that says there is difference between the above mentioned are: "Individual Tibet Entry Permit" - Individual Entering Tibet is granted. "Group Tibet Entry Permit" - Anyone from the group is Absent, the whole group is deny entry. May I know which one is the correct facts?

Jun 15, 2024 11:12
Answered by Tibet Tour team

Tibet Travel Permit, the required travel document for entering Tibet Autonomous Region, has no distinction between individual and group. . What your friends might have mentioned is the Group Visa, specifically required for entry into Tibet from Nepal. You'll have to apply for the Group Visa at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, and you'll need at least four people in your group. You'll all have to enter and leave Tibet together. But if you're entering Tibet from mainland China, you don't need this group thing. Our travel consultant will contact you with more details and help you arrange your trip to Tibet.
