Transportation from Lhasa to Lake Namtso
Lake Namtso is one of the most stunning natural wonders in Tibet. Located about 240 kilometers northwest of Lhasa, it's one of the highest saltwater lakes in the world, sitting at an elevation of 4,718 meters. The lake's crystal-clear, turquoise waters surrounded by snow-capped mountains leave every tourist a deep impression. Besides, the scenery en route from Lhasa to Lake Namtso is so spectacular and makes this route so popular.
Get to Lake Namtso from Lhasa by Car
The most convenient way to explore Lake Namtso is by car, which allows you to enjoy the beauty of nature up close and stop for photo ops along the way. The most popular route follows the Qinghai-Tibet Highway (G109), starting from Lhasa's bustling streets, passing through the Dumxung Grassland. As you approach the Lake Namtso, the snow-capped peaks of the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains come into view. The 210-kilometer journey typically takes about 4 hours.

Our experienced tour guides will accompany you throughout the journey, providing in-depth explanations about the cultural and historical significance of the places you visit. Alternatively, we offer comprehensive tour packages that include a well-planned itinerary, a professional local guide, and so on. Additionally, our packages often include entrance fees, accommodation, and transportation, so you don't have to worry about hidden costs.
Get to Lake Namtso from Lhasa by Train
If you're planning a trip from Lhasa to Lake Namtso, taking the train is a wonderful option. The train journey typically takes around 5 hours, and the cost varies depending on the seat type. For seats, you can choose from hard seats, hard sleepers, and soft sleepers. A hard seat ticket might cost around $9, offering a budget-friendly choice. If you prefer more comfort for a reasonable price, a hard sleeper, which charges about $23, is a better choice. Soft sleepers, while more expensive, around $35, provide the utmost comfort with private compartments.
Traveling by train has several advantages. You can enjoy the changing landscapes at a leisurely pace. As the train chugs along, you'll pass by vast grasslands where yaks and sheep graze, and snow-capped mountains. It's a great way to relax and soak in the beauty of the Tibetan Plateau while minimizing your fatigue.
However, note that the train doesn't take you directly to Lake Namtso. After arriving at Nagqu Railway Station from the Lhasa Railway Station, you'll still need a chartered vehicle to complete the final leg of your journey to Lake Namtso. The drive from Nagqu to Lake Namtso takes approximately 2 to 3 hours. This additional trip allows you to further explore the local scenery and interact with friendly locals along the way.
We highly recommend opting for a private Tibet tour. Our professional team takes care of every detail, including purchasing train tickets, arranging transportation from Nagqu Railway Station to Namtso Lake, and organizing accommodations and activities.
Conclusion
The beauty of both Lhasa and Lake Namtso is beyond words. With the best season to visit Tibet just around the corner, don't wait any longer. Reach out to our travel agency now to get more information and start planning your unforgettable journey!
