Ngari Region Trekking: Remote Western Tibet Itineraries
Located at the far west of the Tibetan Plateau, the Ngari Region is one of the cradles of the ancient Zhang Zhung civilization. Many religious buildings and ruins in the Ngari Region have a close connection with the Zhang Zhung civilization. Moreover, many of the customs and lifestyles of the Tibetan people today, such as circumambulating sacred mountains, worshiping sacred lakes, hanging colorful prayer flags, carving stone inscriptions, placing mani piles, and fortune-telling, all originate from the Bon practices of the Zhang Zhung era. The average altitude of the Ngari Region is above 4,500 meters. There are numerous mountain ranges, with the main ones being the Himalayas and the Gangdise Mountains. The famous sacred mountain in Ngari region, Mount Kailash, and its surrounding snow peaks melt into rivers that converge into several life-giving rivers in Tibet, such as the Maquan River, which is the source of the Yarlung Tsangpo River.
The journey from Lhasa to Tarchen Town, the starting point of the Mount Kailash kora (pilgrimage circuit), spans approximately 1,400 kilometers and takes over 20 hours. Due to the route's remote location, it offers raw natural landscapes and off-the-beaten-path experiences, setting it apart from Tibet's more popular trekking trails. Along the way, you can admire ancient monasteries perched on rugged cliffs, serene alpine lakes that mirror the sky, and mysterious mani stone piles. For devotees, the kora is a sacred journey to purify the soul and absolve sins, making it common to encounter devout pilgrims along the trail, often seen prostrating themselves or reciting mantras as they circle the holy mountain.

What Ancient Attractions in Tibet's Ngari Region are Most Visited by Tourists?
Tholing Monastery, founded during the Guge Kingdom era, stands out for its architecture and murals influenced by the ancient Zhang Zhung civilization. Its halls showcase a fusion of Tibetan, Indian, and Nepalese artistic styles, with vivid wall paintings depicting Buddhist deities and historical scenes, reflecting Zhang Zhung's profound cultural legacy.
Nearby, the Guge Kingdom Ruins are a treasure trove of Bon-related murals and sculptures, revealing the pre-Buddhist spiritual roots of the region. These artworks not only highlight exceptional craftsmanship but also illustrate how Zhangzhung culture shaped later religious practices.

Dongga and Piyang Caves, the world's largest Buddhist cave ruins are carved into cliffs. These 1,000-year-old caves house well-preserved murals and scriptures, offering a glimpse into monastic life from millennia ago.
Tridapuryi Temple attracts visitors for its ancient stupas and prayer halls, embodying the enduring spiritual heritage of Ngari.

Conclusion
April and May are the golden periods for a Kailash pilgrimage, thanks to the mild climate, the celebration of the Saga Dawa Festival, and the diverse landscapes. During these months, the weather is relatively warm, and the festival adds a special spiritual significance to the journey. The scenery is also varied, with the mountains still capped with snow and the grasslands beginning to turn green. In contrast, September and October see fewer travelers due to lower temperatures, more challenging road conditions, and fewer festivals. However, if you prefer a less crowded experience and enjoy the autumnal hues, mid-to-late September can be a good choice, provided you are well-prepared for the cold and have planned your route carefully.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
