What Is Lhasa Famous for?

Oct 6, 2025 9:56 By Lewis

Lhasa, the City of Sunlight, is a high-altitude place where you can enjoy sunshine to the fullest. It's not only the seat of government of Tibet, but also the provincial capital of commerce, culture, and tourism. In this sacred place of Tibetan Buddhism, religious beliefs have deeply influenced the customs of the locals, so you can experience the rich religious atmosphere here in all aspects. The vast majority of tourists who travel to Tibet take Lhasa as their first stop. Therefore, I strongly recommend you make the most of your time in Lhasa. Next, I will outline the most worthwhile attractions to you in Lhasa. The best and key attractions in Lhasa include the Potala Palace, Barkhor Street, The Sera Monastery.

What Is Lhasa Famous for?

Lhasa Famous Attraction: The Potala Palace

The Potala Palace is listed as a world cultural heritage. Just like tourists who travel to Paris will definitely visit the Eiffel Tower, tourists who travel to Lhasa will absolutely come to appreciate the grandeur of the Potala Palace. At first sight, the large palace-style building complex, divided into the White Palace and the Red Palace, will immediately catch your eye. When visiting the interior of the palace, you will join a feast for the eyes. You can see the pagodas decorated with a large number of distinguished gems, murals on the theme of Buddhist stories, historical events, myths and legends, and exquisite golden and bronze Buddha statues in various shapes. As far as I'm concerned that the Potala Palace is regarded as the top one among must-see attractions in Lhasa.

What Is Lhasa Famous for?

Lhasa Famous Attraction: Barkhor Street

Barkhor Street is the oldest commercial street in Lhasa, which has preserved the traditional appearance and way of living of the ancient Lhasa. Here, many believers hold prayer wheels and turn clockwise along Barkhor Street every day. Following in their footsteps, feel the piety and find inner peace.

When you shuttle through all kinds of shops, vast arrays of Tibetan specialty goods will make you feel fresh. Are you interested in Tibetan handicrafts? There is a variety of exquisite handicrafts such as Tibetan carpets, Tibetan knives, Thangkas, ethnic costumes and so on. I believe you can find Tibetan gifts or souvenirs that suit your taste.

What Is Lhasa Famous for?

Lhasa Famous Attraction: The Sera Monastery

The Sera Monastery is one of the six main monasteries of the Gelugpa of Tibetan Buddhism. A steady stream of people come to worship at the Sera Monastery every year, and Buddhist debate of the Sera Monastery is popular with tourists. You can see many monks in red robes participating in Buddhist debate, experiencing the spiritual life of Tibetan Buddhist monks.

Best Time to Visit Lhasa for Festivals: June to September

Who won’t love a lively festival atmosphere? Tibetan Festive activities can add more color to your trip, deepen your understanding of Tibetan culture, and offer a chance to make friends with the Tibetans. The average maximum temperature in Lhasa in summer is between 22 degrees and 26 degrees, which is generally cool and comfortable.

The Shetton Festival at the end of June and the beginning of July in the Tibetan calendar is one of the grandest festivals in Lhasa, during which there are Buddhist exhibitions, Tibetan opera performances, and activities such as Displaying the Buddha painting. You can experience the joy of harvest together with the locals by participating in festival activities.

The Linka Festival, on the 15th of May in the Tibetan calendar, is a traditional festival of worship and entertainment. Tibetans will set up tents, make various delicacies, have outdoor picnics, and enjoy a leisure time. You can taste traditional Tibetan food such as highland barley wine, butter tea, tsampa.

Popular Tourist Itineraries of Lhasa

8 Days Lhasa to Everest Base Camp Tour: It covers all the popular attractions of Lhasa and Mount Everest. During this Tibet trip, you can walk by the picturesque lake, and catch a glimpse of the world's highest peak. You can also step into the lives of the Tibetans and enjoy the local unique songs and dances.

10 Days Lhasa to Everest Base Camp and Namtso Lake Tour: In addition to the famous attractions of Lhasa and Mount Everest, you can freely run on the Damxung grassland. Sheep, cattle and horses wander on the green grass, with white clouds and clear blue sky, as if you are in paradise on earth.

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Is it open for Indian Passport Holder?

Answered by Tibet Vista

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.

We would like to stay in Lhasa for 10 days total, then leave by plane. Can you arrange a permit for this trip for us (3 Canadians)? Best regards, Brigitte Mueller

The "Tibet Entry Permit" should be apply

I heard from my friend that says there is difference between the above mentioned are: "Individual Tibet Entry Permit" - Individual Entering Tibet is granted. "Group Tibet Entry Permit" - Anyone from the group is Absent, the whole group is deny entry. May I know which one is the correct facts?

Jun 15, 2024 11:12
Answered by Tibet Vista

Tibet Travel Permit, the required travel document for entering Tibet Autonomous Region, has no distinction between individual and group. . What your friends might have mentioned is the Group Visa, specifically required for entry into Tibet from Nepal. You'll have to apply for the Group Visa at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, and you'll need at least four people in your group. You'll all have to enter and leave Tibet together. But if you're entering Tibet from mainland China, you don't need this group thing. Our travel consultant will contact you with more details and help you arrange your trip to Tibet.

Dear Kadam, We appreciate your message and are here to help. If you are an Indian national with a Singapore passport, you can sign up for our 15-day Kailash and Manasarova Small Group Tour that departs on Sept, 1st. Firstly, you need to go to the Chinese Embassy in Singapore and fill out the application form to apply for the Chinese Visa yourself. After you get your Chinese Visa, you are expected to email the photos of your Singapore passport information page and Chinese Visa page to us to apply for Tibet Travel Permit on your behalf. Well, if you have applied a China Visa, a great option is to email the image of your Chinese visa page to us and we can help you apply for Tibet Travel Permit on your behalf. So, you can fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa for Tibet visit. A recommended tour for you is 5 Days Lhasa and Yamdrok Lake Small Group Tour where you can visit the landmarks of Tibetan monasteries in Lhasa and explore the holy turquoise Yamdrok Lake on a short excursion. Another important thing to consider is that due to the high elevation and thin air in Tibet, do consult a doctor to decide if it is safe to bring the infant to Tibet for travel with you.
