Gongbu New Year: A Warm Early-Winter Celebration in Nyingchi, Tibet
Celebrated exclusively in Nyingchi Prefecture, Gongbu New Year is Tibet's earliest New Year, a vibrant festival that blends ancient traditions with the stunning natural beauty of Nyingchi's early winter. Unlike the traditional Tibetan New Year, which falls around late February to early March (corresponding to the first month of the Tibetan calendar), Gongbu New Year takes place on the first day of the tenth Tibetan month—usually in early December on the Gregorian calendar. This timing makes it an ideal opportunity to explore Nyingchi's snow-dusted forests, calm turquoise rivers, and iconic peaks like Namcha Barwa while joining local families in their joyful celebrations.

Unforgettable Gongbu New Year Customs to Experience
Gongbu New Year is filled with unique rituals that reflect the region's close bond with nature and community. One of the most heartwarming traditions is the "dog feast"—local families prepare a plate of tsampa, dried yak meat, cheese, and fruits for their dogs, believing that if the dog eats grain first, it predicts a bountiful harvest year. You'll also see families wearing colorful Gongbu costumes, a distinctive style of long sleeveless jackets made from local wool, as they exchange khatas (white ceremonial scarves) and offer "qiema"—a sacred mixture of barley and wheat that symbolizes prosperity. On New Year's Eve, households hold a "ghost-driving" ceremony, where they sprinkle small stones and light torches to ward off bad luck, followed by gathering around the stove to roast "jieda"—a crispy wheat dough snack that's eaten warm with buckwheat cakes. In villages of the Bayi District, you can join in Gongbu arrow shooting, a thrilling sport where men in traditional hunting attire sing arrow songs while competing, or dance the lively Guozhuang with locals around a bonfire as the night unfolds.

Explore Nyingchi's Charms During Gongbu New Year
Celebrating Gongbu New Year also lets you experience Nyingchi's early winter charm, a season often overlooked by tourists but equally breathtaking. After joining village celebrations, take a trip to Basum Tso Lake, where the water turns a crystal-clear blue and the surrounding forests glow with golden and red hues. A short drive from Bayi District, Lulang Town offers cozy wooden lodges and stunning views of snow-capped mountains, perfect for a peaceful retreat after the festive excitement. The mild winter climate in Nyingchi (daytime temperatures around 12-20°C) makes exploring these spots comfortable.

Conclusion
We'll arrange homestays with welcoming Gongbu families, provide knowledgeable local guides who speak English and understand the festival's traditions, and handle all the details from permit applications to transportation.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
