Complete Lhokha Weather Guide for Travelers
Is Lhokha on your travel radar? Located to the south of Lhasa, about 130 kilometres away and nestled south of the Nyenchen Tangula Mountains, this lesser-known Tibetan gem offers a treasure trove of experiences. And its river valley location gives it a milder climate than northern Tibet, making it a year-round travel hotspot. Ready to dive into Lhokha's weather?
Spring: Warming Up but Windy
Spring in Lhokha, from March to May, is a time of transition. Average temperatures range from 5℃ to 15℃, with daytime feeling warm under the plentiful sunshine, but dropping to around 0℃ at night. April might see some river valley sandstorms, but by May, precipitation is low and the air is dry. For photography enthusiasts, this season is a paradise. The grasslands turn green again, and the area around Samye Monastery is adorned with blooming peach and apricot flowers, creating perfect photo ops. Plus, the lead-up to the Tibetan traditional Saga Dawa Festival in late March and April offers a glimpse into local culture. Just make sure to pack warm layers for the chilly nights.

Summer: Rainy but Refreshing
Summer, spanning June to August, is Lhokha's rainy season. The average temperature sits between 10℃ and 20℃. Most rain falls in the evenings or at night, with daytime seeing occasional showers. The river valleys are more humid, and areas like around Yamdrok Lake might experience short hailstorms, causing a sudden 5℃ to 8℃ temperature drop. But don't let the rain put you off. The Yarlung Tsangpo River is swollen and majestic, and the grasslands are lush and green. The comfortable temperatures also make it ideal for spending time outdoors, exploring places like Samye Monastery and the Qingpu meditation site.
Autumn: Clear Skies and Perfect Travelling
Autumn in Lhokha, from September to November, is simply magical and it's the best season to visit. Temperatures average between 3℃ and 18℃, rainfall is rare, and the skies are clear with high visibility. The difference between day and night temperatures becomes even more pronounced. During the day, a light jacket suffices, but at night, temperatures near 0℃ call for warmer clothing, and frosts can occur in mountainous areas. The lack of rain means outdoor activities are a delight. Yamdrok Lake's surface is a clear, unclouded blue. From Yongbulakang Palace, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Yarlung Tsangpo River valley. Around October, the grasslands take on a golden hue, creating a unique "Golden Plateau" landscape that's a photographer's dream.

Winter: Cold but Cozy
Winter, from December to February, is cold and dry in Lhokha, with average temperatures between -5℃ and 10℃. It's dry, with almost no precipitation. While daytime can feel okay in the sunshine, nights often drop below -10℃. Some high-altitude roads, like those to Puma Yumco Lake, may be icy and require non-slip measures. But winter has its unique charm. Fewer tourists mean you can enjoy the tranquility of Samye Monastery and Yongbulakang Palace without crowds. Around January, Puma Yumco Lake freezes over, revealing its stunning "blue ice" landscape. Just be cautious and avoid going onto the ice alone. Plus, accommodation and transportation costs are much lower than in peak seasons, making it a great option for budget-conscious travelers who enjoy peace and quiet.
Weather Tips for Lhokha's Top Spots
Lhokha's weather isn't one-size-fits-all—here's what you need to know for key sites:
Yamdrok Lake (4,441m): 5–8°C cooler than Lhokha's downtown (3,570m). Even in summer, a light jacket is a must—wind off the lake can chill you fast.
Lebu Valley (2,800m): Lower altitude means more rain and humidity in summer. Pack moisture-wicking clothes and a small dehumidifier bag for your suitcase.
Samye Monastery: Spring winds pick up here (it's on the Yarlung Tsangpo's north bank), and summer evenings often have light rain. Keep a compact rain jacket in your bag.

Conclusion
No matter which season you pick for your Lhokha trip, a one-of-a-kind experience awaits you. No need to stress over packing lists or second-guess the best time to go—just share your travel needs with us directly, and we’ll craft a personalized Tibet travel suggestion tailored just for you.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
