Ganden Monastery: One of Tibet's Top 3 Gelugpa Monasteries
When travelers plan their Tibet travel, they often include the famous Lhasa monasteries in their itinerary. While Sera Monastery and Drepung Monastery are conveniently located within the city, the third of the Great Three Gelugpa monasteries requires a bit more journey. Perched atop Wangpori Mountain in Dazi County approximately 60 kilometers from Lhasa, Ganden Monastery presents spiritual devotion and architectural brilliance. Founded in 1409 by Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelugpa school, it's the root monastery of the tradition, the spiritual home from which all other Gelugpa institutions grew.

The entire complex cascades down the slopes with golden roofs, red accents, and white walls creating a stunning visual against the blue Tibetan sky, and it comprises over 50 structures that house prayer halls, living quarters, and sacred spaces. The main assembly hall, known as Tsochen Chenmo, is supported by 108 columns and can host up to 3,000 monks during ceremonies—an awe-inspiring sight that connects visitors to centuries of uninterrupted spiritual practice.
One of the most fascinating features is the "flying stone" in the Yangbajian Scripture Hall, a massive rock said to have originated from India that displays intricate carvings of mandalas. Within the Jangtse Tratsang chapel, the nine-headed, thirty-four-armed Deity of Awe inspires both reverence and wonder. Elaborate mandalas inlaid with precious stones and metals demonstrate the incredible craftsmanship that Tibetan Buddhist art is renowned for.

For the best panoramic views, climb to the Larong Palace at the monastery's highest point. From here, the entire Lhasa River Valley unfolds before you, with the distant Potala Palace visible on clear days. The elevation might leave you breathless, but the vista is more than worth it.
The silver reliquary of Tsongkhapa represents one of Ganden's most cherished treasures. This magnificent structure, covered in gold and adorned with coral, turquoise, and sands from India's Ganges River, contains the preserved physical body of the great master himself.
Each year on the Tibetan calendar's October 25th, the Butter Lamp Festival illuminates the reliquary with thousands of flickering lights as devotees circle it with prayer wheels, their chants mingling with the sound of wind-whipped prayer flags .

Conclusion
Ganden Monastery welcomes visitors with a modest 50 yuan entrance fee. The kora path around the monastery offers not just spiritual merit but breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. This walking path provides a perfect opportunity for contemplation while taking in panoramic vistas of the Lhasa area.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
