Darchen Travel Guide: The Beginning and End of the Mount Kailash Pilgrimage
Located in Purang County, Ngari Prefecture, at an altitude of around 4,600 meters, Darchen is the gateway to one of Tibet's most sacred journeys—the Mount Kailash pilgrimage.
This small but vital town lies cradled between the majestic Mount Kailash and the serene Lake Manasarovar, offering a unique blend of spiritual significance and practical convenience. While the iconic peak of Mount Kailash isn't directly visible from Darchen, the town rewards visitors with breathtaking sunrise and sunset views over Mount Naimona'nyi, painting the sky in hues of gold and crimson.

Darchen's primary role is as the starting and ending point for the Mount Kailash kora. Every pilgrim, whether a devout follower or an adventurous traveler, begins and concludes their journey here. The town acts as a vital hub where paths converge—both literal and spiritual. Its streets, lined with guesthouses, tea houses, and supply shops, buzz with anticipation as trekkers prepare for the epic 52-kilometer trek. Beyond its spiritual significance, Darchen is a lifeline in the remote Ngari Plateau, offering essential services like lodging, meals, and basic medical aid. For those arriving from lower altitudes, it's a critical acclimatization stop before tackling the high-altitude trek.
Darchen's strategic location makes it the perfect base for exploring the region's sacred geography. A short 2-hour drive from town leads to the shores of Lake Manasarovar, where pilgrims often ritualize their journey with a purifying bath. Nearby, the hauntingly beautiful "Ghost Lake," Lake Rakshastal, adds to the area's mystical allure. From Darchen, you can easily access these sites without detours, making it a practical and spiritual anchor for your travels.

When you're in Darchen, one spot you won't want to miss is the Prayer Flag Square—it's where the Kora vibe really kicks off, with colorful flags flapping in the wind and locals leaving small offerings. You've got two ways to get there, and both have their charm. If you're up for a gentle walk (great for acclimating!), it's about 6km from Darchen's main street, which takes about 1 or 2 hours. If walking sounds tiring, hop on the eco-bus, and a one-way ticket costs around 60 CNY. The bus will drop you right at the square.
Now, let's talk about the final stretch of the Mount Kailash outer Kora: from Dzultripuk Monastery back to Darchen. After days of hiking, this last part can feel like a victory lap, but you've got two choices to finish strong. Trekking is the classic option—it's about 14km, mostly downhill, and the path follows a small stream. You'll pass more prayer flags and maybe even spot yaks grazing in the meadows. It takes 3–4 hours. If your legs are sore, the eco-bus is here to help. Look for the sign that says "Eco-bus to Darchen." The bus ride takes 20 minutes, costing around 50 CNY.

Conclusion
If you're planning a pilgrimage in the near future, 2026 is a special year. It's a Horse Year in the Tibetan tradition, and circumambulating Mount Kailash during this time is believed to multiply the merits of the kora by 13 times. The convergence of the Horse Year with the Saga Dawa Festival—which falls on May 31, 2026—creates an exceptionally powerful spiritual occasion. During Saga Dawa, festivities celebrating Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana infuse the region with vibrant energy, drawing pilgrims from across the globe. However, this also means limited resources and heightened demand for accommodations and services. To secure your spot for this inspiring experience, early planning and bookings are highly recommended.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
