Tibet Nepal Tour Cost Guide 2026: Budget Breakdown for Foreign Travelers
For Tibet, you'll first need a valid Chinese tourist visa. The cost varies by your nationality, travelers from most other countries can expect fees between $20 and $70. The processing time takes about four working days, so plan ahead to avoid last-minute rushes. After securing your Chinese visa, you'll need a Tibet Travel Permit, a mandatory document for all foreign visitors to Tibet. The good news is that our local Tibet travel agency offers free permit applications for pre-booked tours; we just need a copy of your passport and visa, and the process takes 8-9 working days. If you're from a visa-exempt country, you can skip the Chinese visa and apply for the Tibet Travel Permit directly with your passport. For Nepal, the process is simpler: a 30-day multi-entry visa costs $50 and is easily obtainable on arrival at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport or most border crossings, just bring your passport and cash for the fee.

Transportation Costs: Flights vs. Overland Tours
Transportation makes up a big chunk of your budget, and your choice between flying and overlanding will shape both your costs and experience. Flying between Tibet and Nepal is the fastest option: Himalaya Airlines operates daily direct flights between Lhasa and Kathmandu, with tickets starting at $362 and a flight time of just 2 hours. They also added a weekly Lhasa-Pokhara flight in 2025 for travelers wanting to combine Lhasa's temples with Pokhara's lakes, starting at $410. For those seeking adventure, the iconic Sino-Nepal Friendship Highway overland journey is unbeatable, and our curated packages make it affordable too. Our 7-day Lhasa to Kathmandu small group tour starts at $962 per person, while the reverse 8-day Kathmandu to Lhasa tour begins at $1048. Both include oxygen-equipped vehicles, local guides, and all ground transfers—sharing these costs with a small group keeps individual expenses low. If you're booking flights independently, remember that pre-booking 3 to 6 months in advance can save you up to 20% on ticket prices, especially during peak seasons.

Accommodation & Meal Costs: Balancing Comfort and Budget
Accommodation typically accounts for about 20% of your total trip cost, and you'll find options to fit every budget. In major cities like Lhasa, Shigatse, and Kathmandu, 3-star hotels average $30 per night, offering clean rooms and basic amenities—this is the standard included in our tour packages. Upgrading to 4-star hotels costs about $80 per night, while luxury options like Lhasa's Shangri-La start at $200. In remote areas like Everest Base Camp or along the Kailash Mansarovar route, accommodation is more basic (think warm, clean guesthouses) and costs $20-$25 per night. Meals are surprisingly affordable: in local eateries, you can enjoy Tibetan momos, noodle soup, and so on for $2-$5 per meal. Western food or higher-end restaurants will cost around $10 per meal, and most hotels include breakfast in their rates. On average, plan to spend $10-$20 per day on meals, with costs staying consistent even in remote areas despite the challenge of transporting ingredients.

Attraction Entrance Fees & Guide Services
Entrance fees for attractions add up, so it's wise to factor them in early. In Tibet, major sites like the Potala Palace cost about $30, and most entrance fees range from $5 to $20. In Nepal, fees are lower. Guide services are mandatory in Tibet, and our English-speaking local guides are included in all our tour packages—they bring local history and culture to life, making your journey more meaningful. Tips for guides and drivers are optional but appreciated; a recommended $7 per day split between them is standard. In Nepal, guides aren't required but are helpful for trekking or exploring cultural sites, costing $25-$35 per day.
Conclusion
Personal expenses vary based on your habits, including souvenirs, Travel insurance, and so on. When you add up all the individual costs, all-inclusive tour packages offer great value for money. Come to get more details!

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
