Tibet Souvenirs Shopping Tips in Barkhor Street
Barkhor Street is always popular with tourists. There, you will be surrounded by all kinds of local specialties with exquisite craftsmanship, and you may come across some souvenirs that you want to buy. To ensure a delightful shopping experience, the following points should be noted.
Shop around and Get the Best Deal
In fact, there are different merchants selling the same products. Before making your mind, try to walk into different shops, maybe you will find a surprise. In this way, you can bargain with more confidence and avoid being overcharged by merchants.
Make a Bargain before Buying
Of course you can make a bargain with merchants to get a good price. Usually, there is room to negotiate prices, especially for non-fixed priced items like souvenirs. However, bargaining should be done moderately to avoid unnecessary disputes. It's best that you have a good manner and don't be too assertive or unreasonable. Tibetan merchants are usually quite friendly, and they are more willing to give you a reasonable price if you have a friendly attitude. You should also learn to make appropriate concessions. If the merchant insists on a certain price, you can slightly increase your offer.
Identify the Authenticity of Goods
When it comes to medicines and jewelry, you should go to formal and certificated stores and carefully examine the quality. For valuable items, you must keep the shopping receipt, which can effectively protect your own rights and interests.
Pay with Alipay or Wechat
Almost every merchant in Tibet has a QR code. By Alipay or Wechat, you'll find it so convenient to do some shopping. It's easy and free for you to register an account with Alipay or Wechat.
Remember to Respect Tibetan Customs
Barkhor Street is not only a traditional shopping center, but also a place for believers of Tibetan Buddhism to engage in religious activities. When visiting, please respect Tibetan religious beliefs, try to walk clockwise, and do not disturb the devotees who are spinning Tibetan prayer wheels and bowing their heads. You must ask for permission before taking photos of others. If you encounter religious sites or religious ceremonies, do not take photos without permission to avoid causing unnecessary trouble.
Pay Attention to Property Safety
Although the public security is good in Tibet, you still need to stay alert and be careful of pickpockets, especially in crowded places such as the market and the entrance of shops.
Avoid Buying Prohibited items:
Do not purchase products made from protected wild animals such as Tibetan antelope horns and wild yak heads. You can't take these items out of Tibet, and your buying behaviour does harm to the protection of wild animals.
