February Tibet Photography Guide: Must-Shoot Landscapes & Weather Prep

Nov 27, 2025 11:27 By lewis

If you've ever dreamed of chasing “golden hour” magic in Tibet—when soft morning or evening light bathes snow-dusted temples like the Potala Palace or Jokhang Temple, turning their roofs into glowing gold—or capturing the otherworldly blue ice of high-altitude lakes, February is the month to make that dream real. This time of year, crowds thin out, skies stay crisp and clear, and the cold air sharpens every view.

Lhasa

Must-Shoot Landmarks

Potala Palace: As the iconic landmark of Lhasa, the Potala Palace takes on an air of enhanced majesty during the winter months. The morning and evening sunlight cast a warm glow on its grand structure, highlighting its intricate architectural details. For photographers, this is a golden opportunity to capture not only the palace's exterior but also the devout worshippers outside.

Jokhang Temple: A pivotal Tibetan Buddhist temple, the Jokhang Temple continues to bustle with activity in February. The flickering incense and the earnest prayers of the faithful create a deeply spiritual atmosphere. You can focus on the devotees' sincere worship and the vibrant Barkhor Street that surrounds the temple. This area exudes a rich religious ambiance and offers a glimpse into the daily life and culture of Tibet, making it a perfect spot to capture the essence of Tibetan Buddhism and tradition.

Weather Preparation

In February, Lhasa's average temperatures range from -5℃ to 10℃, with significant day-night temperature differences and generally cold weather. To keep warm, bring heavy coats, hats, gloves, and scarves.

Lhasa is also quite windy in February, so pack a windproof jacket and protective gear for your equipment.

With abundant sunshine and strong UV rays, don't forget to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and moisturizing products.

Shigatse

Must-Shoot Landmarks

Tashilhunpo Monastery: As an important Gelug school monastery in Tibetan Buddhism, Tashilhunpo Monastery offers a more peaceful atmosphere for photography in winter when there are fewer tourists. The monastery is filled with iconic elements such as statues, murals, and prayer flags, all of which make for excellent photographic subjects. Additionally, capturing the daily lives of the monks can add a unique dimension to your portfolio.

Mount Everest: February presents a precious chance to witness the breathtaking "Golden Summit" phenomenon at Mount Everest. When the golden sunlight strikes the snow-capped peak, the sight is truly spectacular. Near the Everest Base Camp in Dingri County, photographers can capture not only the stunning sunrises and sunsets over Everest but also the surrounding snowy mountain ranges, making it a paradise for photography enthusiasts.

Weather Preparation

In February, Shigatse experiences low average temperatures, typically between -8℃ and 8℃. The high altitude also results in thin air and low oxygen levels. In addition to warm clothing, it's advisable to bring oxygen bags or oxygen tanks.

The dry air can affect skin and respiratory health, so pack a humidifier and essential medications.

Shannan

Must-Shoot Landmarks

Yongbalakang Palace: Perched on a hill in Shannan, this ancient palace exudes an air of mystery and grandeur under the February sunlight. Photographers can capture panoramic views of the palace, as well as the harmonious blend of the palace with the surrounding snow-capped mountains and grasslands.

Yamdrok Lake: In winter, the water level of Yamdrok Lake is relatively low, creating a striking contrast between the icy lake edges and the deep blue waters. Here, you can photograph intricate details of the lake, ice cracks, and reflections of distant snowy peaks. Additionally, there are opportunities to capture local herdsmen and yaks in their daily activities against this stunning backdrop.

Weather Preparation

February temperatures in Shannan usually range from -5℃ to 12℃, with strong winds especially near lakes and mountain passes. Ensure you have adequate warm clothing to protect against the wind and cold.

The weather in this region can be unpredictable, with potential snowfall. Pack a waterproof camera bag and extra batteries to safeguard your equipment.

Nyingchi

Must-Shoot Landmarks

Mount Kailash: In winter, Mount Kailash occasionally reveals its majestic summit. As the first rays of morning sunlight grace the peak in February, the "Golden Summit" spectacle is truly mesmerizing. In locations like Suosong Village in Nyingchi, photographers can capture stunning scenes of Mounts alongside peach blossoms and sea clouds.

Basumtso Lake: In February, the banks of Basumtso Lake may be covered in snow, and the lake surface shimmers under the sunlight. This setting offers perfect opportunities to photograph snow-capped mountains, forests, and snowy landscapes around the lake, as well as ice formations and floating ice chunks on the lake surface, creating a fairytale-like winter wonderland.

Weather Preparation

Average temperatures in the Nyingchi region during February range from -3℃ to 15℃. Despite the relatively mild conditions, it's still advisable to pack warm clothing.

Precipitation is relatively common in this area, with possibilities of snow or rain. Bring rain gear and a waterproof camera bag to protect your equipment.

Nagqu

Must-Shoot Landmarks

Grasslands and Snow-Capped Mountains: The vast grasslands of Nagqu are transformed into a winter wonderland covered in snow, blending seamlessly with distant snowy mountains to form a breathtaking panorama. You can capture scenes of yaks and Tibetan sheep foraging in the snow, showcasing the pristine beauty of the northern Tibetan plateau.

Weather Preparation

In February, average temperatures in the Nagqu region range from -10℃ to 5℃, with cold weather and strong winds. Pack heavy winter clothing, including warm hats, gloves, and shoes.

Altitude sickness may be more pronounced in this area. It's recommended to prepare altitude sickness medication in advance and engage in physical exercise before your trip to enhance your body's adaptability.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April

Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Is it open for Indian Passport Holder?

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.

The "Tibet Entry Permit" should be apply

I heard from my friend that says there is difference between the above mentioned are: "Individual Tibet Entry Permit" - Individual Entering Tibet is granted. "Group Tibet Entry Permit" - Anyone from the group is Absent, the whole group is deny entry. May I know which one is the correct facts?

Jun 15, 2024 11:12
Answered by Tibet Tour team

Tibet Travel Permit, the required travel document for entering Tibet Autonomous Region, has no distinction between individual and group. . What your friends might have mentioned is the Group Visa, specifically required for entry into Tibet from Nepal. You'll have to apply for the Group Visa at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, and you'll need at least four people in your group. You'll all have to enter and leave Tibet together. But if you're entering Tibet from mainland China, you don't need this group thing. Our travel consultant will contact you with more details and help you arrange your trip to Tibet.
