Weather Tips for Tibet Visitors by Season

Sep 22, 2025 5:23 By Lewis

No matter which season you choose to visit Tibet, you will experience a unique flavor. Due to Tibet's unique geographical environment, there are significant climatic differences throughout the year. To make the most of your trip, it is essential to familiarize yourself with seasonalized advice. Each season has its own charm, and understanding the specific conditions can help you plan a more enjoyable and memorable journey.

Weather Tips for Tibet Visitors by Season

Weather Tips for Tibet Visitors in Spring

Spring in Tibet, from March to May, is a season with distinct weather characteristics. The climate is gradually warming up, but the temperature still fluctuates greatly. During the day, it may reach around 15°C in some areas, while at night, it can drop close to freezing, especially in high-altitude regions. One of the most notable features is the strong winds. Spring in Tibet often witnesses gusty winds, which can stir up sand and dust in certain areas. To protect yourself, make sure to bring a wind-proof hat, a scarf, and a mask. These items not only shield you from the blowing sand but also keep you warm when the cold wind hits. Moreover, the dry climate in spring is a concern. The air is extremely arid, causing discomfort such as skin dryness. To stay comfortable, carry a good lip balm, facial moisturizer, and body lotion. Drinking plenty of water is also essential. However, the rewards are magnificent. In Nyingchi, the peach blossoms bloom in late March to early April, creating a breathtaking scenery. For adventure lovers, the trek around Mount Kailash leads to a chance to experience the grandeur of nature.

Weather Tips for Tibet Visitors in Summer

During this season, from June to August, the climate is relatively warm with daytime temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. However, the evenings and early mornings can be significantly cooler, with temperatures dropping to around 10°C, resulting in a daily temperature difference that can exceed 20°C. This means it is essential to pack layered clothing to stay comfortable throughout the day and night. One of the most notable features of summer in Tibet is the frequent evening and night-time rain. While the days are often sunny and clear, the evenings and early mornings can bring sudden downpours. To stay dry and comfortable, it is advisable to bring a waterproof jacket and quick-drying underwear. Additionally, waterproof shoes are a must, as some roads and trails can become muddy and slippery during the rainy season. Despite the rain, summer in Tibet also means higher humidity levels, which can make the weather feel warmer and more oppressive. To cope with this, visitors should stay hydrated and wear breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics. Another important consideration is the increased UV radiation during summer. To protect your skin, it is crucial to bring and use high-SPF sunscreen, as well as UV-protective sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. In summer, it’s recommended to visit Norbulingka, a beautiful summer palace in Lhasa. Also, head to Everest Base Camp to behold the majestic Mount Everest.

Weather Tips for Tibet Visitors in Autumn

Autumn, from September to November, is a spectacular time to visit Tibet. The climate during this season is relatively stable. The days are often sunny with comfortable temperatures, typically ranging from 10 to 20°C, making it ideal for outdoor activities. However, the air in Tibet becomes extremely dry in autumn. To combat this, be sure to carry some moisturizing products. The oxygen content in the air is relatively higher in autumn compared to other seasons, which is great news for those planning to go on treks. Trekking routes around places like Mount Kailash become more accessible. Moreover, a visit to Lake Yamdrok Lake is a must. The lake's stunning turquoise waters against the backdrop of golden-hued mountains make for incredible photos. You can also explore rural areas, visit local families, and learn about their traditional way of life, all while enjoying the pleasant autumn weather. Just remember to bring some warm layers as temperatures can drop at night.

Weather Tips for Tibet Visitors in Winter

Winter in Tibet, from December to February, its temperatures often dropping well below freezing, sometimes reaching -10°C or even lower in many areas. So, it's crucial to pack plenty of warm layers, including thick down jackets, thermal underwear, and insulated boots to stay cozy. Snow is common, and there's a significant risk of snow blindness. Regular sunglasses won't help as they can't filter out the harmful UV rays that cause it. You must wear UV400-rated sunglasses and a snow-specific face mask for proper protection. Roads are frequently covered in ice and snow, making them slippery, so be prepared for possible delays due to weather. In case of a blizzard, have a plan, like carrying extra food, water, and warm blankets. Despite the cold, some famous attractions, such as the Potala Palace, offer lower-priced tickets during the off-season. You can also visit Barkhor Street in Lhasa, which is bustling with locals and pilgrims, and enjoy a cup of warm butter tea.

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Answered by Tibet Vista

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.

We would like to stay in Lhasa for 10 days total, then leave by plane. Can you arrange a permit for this trip for us (3 Canadians)? Best regards, Brigitte Mueller

The "Tibet Entry Permit" should be apply

I heard from my friend that says there is difference between the above mentioned are: "Individual Tibet Entry Permit" - Individual Entering Tibet is granted. "Group Tibet Entry Permit" - Anyone from the group is Absent, the whole group is deny entry. May I know which one is the correct facts?

Jun 15, 2024 11:12
Answered by Tibet Vista

Tibet Travel Permit, the required travel document for entering Tibet Autonomous Region, has no distinction between individual and group. . What your friends might have mentioned is the Group Visa, specifically required for entry into Tibet from Nepal. You'll have to apply for the Group Visa at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, and you'll need at least four people in your group. You'll all have to enter and leave Tibet together. But if you're entering Tibet from mainland China, you don't need this group thing. Our travel consultant will contact you with more details and help you arrange your trip to Tibet.
